Chiara Ligi is a media artist, researcher, and creative producer who explores collaborative forms of creation through audiovisual language, interactive storytelling, and digital media. Her work focuses on communities’ memories, intangible cultural heritage and social issues, relying on participatory and relational approaches. She creates videos, multimedia installations, interactive works and experiments in diverse fields, from performing arts to live cinema.

She graduated in Cinema at the University of Bologna and then she focused on documentary at Nova University in Lisbon. She was mentored in scriptwriting by Tonino Guerra, writer of Fellini, Antonioni, Tarkovskij and many others. In 2007, she joined the pioneering multimedia art collective Studio Azzurro with whom she established a long and prolific collaboration, maturing considerable experience in designing interactive works, video installations and multimedia exhibitions and museums.

In 2012 she resumed her personal journey, alternating personal projects and collaborations with other artists/directors (camerAnebbia, MammaFotogramma, Uovoquadrato, Suranga Katugampala, Alfie Nze, etc). Her recent experiences range from multimedia art to documentary and live cinema productions. Together with Mattia Costa, she founded the Film-Live Association to experiment with film language and live cinema. The project won the Cultural Innovation Fund of Fondazione Cariplo in 2017.

With Mauro Macella, she realises video installations, interactive works, and immersive exhibitions, i.e. Historical voices from the Minett (FNR Award 2021 for Outstanding Promotion of Science to the Public), Remixing industrial pasts and Moving Lusitalia (both included in the ADI Design Index 2023). Together, they founded Tokonoma in 2025. She has been experimenting with live cinema for years with the Film-Live Association, including CenacoloLive (for Da Vinci’s Last Supper Museum and now included in Pinacoteca di Brera’s collection). She is also a research fellow at the Department of Design of Politecnico di Milano, working with the research groups “Imagis Lab” and “Laboratorio Carcere”. Embracing relational and participative approaches, her research explores narrative-driven processes and co-design in marginalised contexts. At Off Campus San Vittore, inside San Vittore prison, she leads Storylab, a participatory storytelling workshop. She has contributed to action-research projects such as ReverseLab, Methexis, and Vocabolario San Vittore. She is a lecturer at Civica Scuola di Cinema Luchino Visconti in multimedia design and interactive storytelling.
